“The harness making and the shoe maker seemed to be closely connected in the early days. Wurtz and Weseloh started in the old Nadiger building and sold to William Kraft who sold it to Chris Kibler. He sold to Mike Fenn who had a harness shop where the old Pfile shoe store stands. He built the house where the Bowmans live and a small shop beside it. George Edighoffer had a shoe repair shop where Mark Brokenshire lived. After the block burned about 1906 Edighoffer moved the shoe store (now owned by Earl Guenther) from Eben Weigand’s corner and the upstairs on and a piece on the back. He sold it to Jake Kellerman and Tieman and Edighoffer bought it back. John Kraft (father of Mrs. Elda Koehler and Ward Kraft) apprenticed with Edighoffer. After Kellerman bought it back, Pete Kraft bought it for his son, John. Clayton Pfile bought the shoe store in 1922 and sold it in 1972. He did other jobs while his wife Matilda looked after the store. Many rolls of wallpaper were put on by Clayton. He once put on 52 rolls in one day at 25 cents an hour. Imagine anyone working for that wage today.”

“In 1942 a group of business men decided to start a club. They called this club the Dashwood Businessman’s Club, with 12 members. The meetings were held upstairs in Clayton Pfile’s shoe store. Clayton Pfile and Dr. Taylor started it.”
