“Dr. Eugene Edward Tieman, the son of Ezra and Mary Ann Tieman of Dashwood, did not practice in the village but did bring recognition to his hometown. Dr. Tieman served with distinction in the Royal Canadian Medical Corps, during the Second World War. He was stationed in northwest Europe in base and field units with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division. In 1942, Dr. Tieman was awarded the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) by King George VI for distinguished service. At the end of the hostilities in Europe, he became Commanding Officer of Canadian Hospital Ship Letiba on its voyage to the Pacific Ocean to repatriate the Canadian troops who had served in Hong Kong. When he retired from the army in 1960, the doctor served on the executive of the Canadian Cancer Society and Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service. Dr. Tieman married Bette Matthews of Barrie in 1938 and they had three children. He died in 1973.”
