“William C. Pfaff (d. 1928) son of Henry S. and Elizabeth, and his wife Mary Ellen (d. 1957), daughter of William and Maria (Koehler) Schwalm, lived in Dashwood where William had a butcher shop, until they bought Lot 14 LRE [Hay] and built the brick home (still in use today). They raised a family of two daughters and three sons, Alice Pearl, Edna Ellen, Horace, Milton and Leonard. Horace took over the farm his parents on their retirement to Exeter. Both are buried in the Exeter Cemetery.
Horace and his wife, Adeline Holtzman, had one daughter, Marylyn, who married Paul Major and lived in the Georgetown area; two sons, Harvey who married Marjory Hoffman of Zurich and lives at St. Mary’s and Arthur who married Rose Clark of St. Mary’s and after her death, married Verna (Wein) Stone and lives at Grand Bend. Years after Adeline’s sudden death, Horace married Rita McBride and they retired to Exeter.
Milton (1893-1963), a teacher, taught in the Bayfield area before joining the 161st Battalion in 1915. He served in France with the 47th Battalion, was injured in 1918 and remained in hospital until 1920. On his return to Canada, he was presented with a medal from the Dashwood and vicinity residents. Milton married Jessie K. Bowey in 1923 and they had one daughter, Helen, who married Charles Harris of Usborne Township and now lives in London. Milton was Exeter’s postmaster for 31 years.
Alice Pearl (1902) worked at the post office in Exeter. She married Hedley May in 1926, and they lived on the Usborne farm with their two daughters and two sons – Kathleen (Ross Hodgert), Marion (Dwayne Tinney), Murray (Ombra Copeland) and Douglas (Marjorie Wood). After her husband’s death, Alice lived in the Exeter Villa Rest Home. Edna Ellen, a teacher, married Robert Love of Stephen in 1926 and later moved to Thedford. Their one son, Junior, lives at Dorchester. Leonard worked in Toronto at Strong’s Drug Store. He married Winnifred Mckenzie of London and they moved to Calgary where their only daughter now lives.”
